The Queen’s Green Canopy and the Essex Forest Initiative

On 17 May, The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative was launched as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Virtual Chelsea Flower Show. Her Majesty The Queen is Patron of the RHS. The patron of the QGC is His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.  The QGC is a unique, UK wide tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 by inviting people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates will be encouraged to plant trees from October 2021 through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022 to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation. Details are available on

Essex County Council has been working increasingly over recent years to plant trees in the county through the Essex Forest Initiative and so are in a good position to help make this initiative a success. ECC are working with the councils in Essex through the Essex Forest Partnership at quarterly meetings of the City, Districts and Boroughs. This partnership planted 38,000 trees in Essex in the recent planting season and has an ambition to plant 1 million trees over 5 years with partners.

The QGC envisages:-

Individuals planting trees on their private land.
Corporates and businesses planting trees on their land and creating tree planting projects with employees.
Platinum Jubilee Community Planting projects for youth groups, Parishes, Residents’ Associations.
A Platinum Jubilee Avenue of medium-sized or large trees ideal for cities, large estates, new housing developments and parishes.
A Platinum Jubilee Copse on private land or land··allocated by the County or Council.
A Platinum School Tree on school grounds involving students and teachers.

All planting projects can be badged with the Queen’s Green Canopy to give enhanced status to greening initiatives and enable further community support. From October, all planting projects can be uploaded onto an interactive map on the QGC website so that everyone can share and inspire others.

The Essex Forest Initiative is offering substantial support in terms of helping access to Forestry Commission grants, a 90% funding offer in partnership with the Woodland Trust for trees and 100% Free Tree packs for small sites.

This project is to mark a unique occasion, the Platinum Jubilee and the extraordinary contribution made by our Queen to the nation over 75 years of service, with a truly sustainable objective for the benefit of future generations.
